Scaling

Scaling

Scaling is done as a prophylaxis for safe removal of plaque and calculus that deposits over the tooth and below the gums. Plaque accumulation leads to irritation, swelling, lowering of gums, eventually leading to loosening of tooth. Oral hygiene is necessary for maintaining the health of the tooth and the surrounding structures as well as the systemic conditions of the body. Scaling removes harmful substances over the surface of the tooth and smoothens the rougher surface. This will prevent formation of debris and plaque and accumulation of toxic products. A final polish will make it difficult for the plaque to adhere to the tooth. Scaling once in 6 months is recommended for good maintenance of the oral cavity. Scaling also reduces the chances of oral malodor and bleeding gums. Patient might have a mild sensitivity and discomfort when ultrasonic scaling is done. Scaling is highly recommended for pregnant women in the second trimester and in diabetic patients.
